No. Buy the boxed copy of Grand Theft Auto VI and you will open a case containing a download code and nothing else. This is not a rumour or a regional quirk — Rockstar says it in plain language on its own store, in a panel headed "Physical (Code-in-Box) Version Available", which states that physical versions will only contain a download code inside the box to support pre-load on November 12, and that "A disc will not be included in the box."

That surprises a lot of people, and it is worth being unambiguous about it before anyone pre-orders a boxed copy expecting an offline installer, a backup, or something they can hand to a friend the way a disc gets handed around.

What Rockstar and Take-Two Have Actually Said

There are two separate primary statements, and they agree.

Rockstar's own storefront carries the code-in-box panel described above, listing an estimated shipping date of November 12, 2026 for the physical version.

Take-Two's pre-order press release, issued June 24, 2026, states that the physical version of Grand Theft Auto VI, containing a download code inside the box, will be available starting November 12, 2026 to support pre-loading. Rockstar's Newswire post announcing pre-orders on the same day carries the same statement.

So the disc question is settled by the publisher, in writing, in three places. No disc-based version of Grand Theft Auto VI has been announced for either platform, and neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has said anything about one arriving later.

Why the Box Ships a Week Before the Game

The November 12 date is the part that makes the format make sense, and it is the reason Rockstar gives for it.

Digital pre-orders unlock pre-loading on November 12, 2026, a full week before the November 19, 2026 launch. Rockstar's Compare Editions panel repeats this on both editions: pre-load begins November 12, 2026. If the boxed version shipped on launch day, everyone who bought it would be a week behind everyone who bought digitally — starting a download on the morning of the 19th while digital buyers press play.

Shipping the code a week early closes that gap. The box lands around November 12, the buyer redeems the code and pre-loads on the same schedule as a digital pre-order, and the game unlocks for everyone on November 19. The earlier ship date is not incidental to the format; Take-Two's release states plainly that supporting pre-loading is the purpose of it.

What This Means on the Day You Open It

Practically, the boxed copy is packaging for a code. Everything else about ownership works the way a digital purchase does:

  • You still download the full game. The code entitles you to the download; it does not shorten it. A boxed copy is not a way to avoid a large install.
  • The box has no bearing on when you can play. The unlock date is November 19, 2026, whether the licence came from a store page or from a card in a case.
  • Picking one off a shelf on launch day means downloading on launch day. The whole point of the November 12 ship date is to avoid that, so a boxed copy bought late offers no head start over a digital one bought at the same moment.

Where Rockstar Will Ship the Box

If you intend to order the physical version from Rockstar directly, its store publishes exactly where it ships. Answering its own question "What regions does the Rockstar Store ship to?", Rockstar lists twenty: Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czechia, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Read that for what it is. It is the Rockstar Store's own shipping list, not a statement about where the boxed version exists — Take-Two's announcement says the game is sold through "global retailers and storefronts" as well, and Rockstar has published nothing about which of those stock the physical edition or where. If you are outside those twenty, the honest position is that Rockstar will not post you one, and what a local retailer does is unannounced.

Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player release for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, sold through the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Rockstar Games Store, and global retailers and storefronts, at $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition. If you are wondering whether a boxed PC copy exists as an alternative, it does not — and neither does a digital one. See Is GTA 6 coming to PC? for what has and has not been announced there.

No Install Size Has Been Announced

This is the obvious follow-up question, and the honest answer is that nobody outside Rockstar can answer it.

Rockstar has not published an install or download size for Grand Theft Auto VI. There is no figure on the game's official site, none on the store's product page, and none in Take-Two's pre-order announcement. Numbers circulating online do not come from Rockstar or Take-Two, and this guide will not repeat or average them — an invented storage figure is exactly the kind of thing that gets copied until it looks confirmed.

What can be said without inventing anything: because there is no disc, every copy is a download, so clearing space before November 12 is sensible regardless of the eventual number. When Rockstar publishes a size, this page will carry it.

Choosing the Box Costs You the GTA+ Month

One real trade-off is documented. Take-Two's release attaches a free month of GTA+ to digital pre-orders, and Rockstar's store files it under a "Digital Store Pre-Order Bonus" heading. A boxed pre-order is not a digital pre-order, so that month is not part of it.

The Vintage Vice City Pack is different, and this is the part people get backwards. It goes to all Grand Theft Auto VI pre-orders and purchases made before November 20, 2026 — the boxed version included. Buying physically does not forfeit it. For how that sits alongside the two editions, see our Standard vs. Ultimate comparison, and for the deadline itself — which falls after launch day — see GTA 6 pre-order bonuses explained.

Resale and Lending: What a Code Implies, and What Is Not Published

This is the question the disc format used to answer for you, so it deserves a careful answer rather than a confident one.

A download code is not a disc, and the difference is structural rather than a matter of policy: a code is redeemed once, onto one account, and after that the entitlement lives with that account rather than with the object in your hands. An unopened box is an unredeemed code; a redeemed code has already done its job. Rockstar's store carries a standing legal disclosure that a purchase grants a licence to the digital product under its Terms of Service, and that certain features may require an internet connection, a Rockstar Games account, or a single-use serial code.

Beyond that general shape, Rockstar has published nothing specific about lending, reselling, or transferring a redeemed Grand Theft Auto VI licence, and this guide is not going to guess at terms it cannot cite. If you have been buying physically precisely so you could lend or resell, treat that as the open question it is rather than assuming either answer.

What Rockstar Has Not Published

For completeness, the gaps as they stand: no disc-based version has been announced for any platform or region; no install or download size has been stated; nothing has been said about a disc release after launch; and no terms have been published covering the transfer of a redeemed licence. The game is also still unrated — Rockstar's store shows the ESRB interim label "Rating Pending — Likely Mature", which is a placeholder shown while a title awaits review, not an assigned rating. A gap-by-gap account of the whole game, packaging included, sits in everything Rockstar has confirmed.
