Can You Play GTA 6 on PS4 or Xbox One?

Image: Rockstar Games
No. Rockstar has announced Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only. Sony's own product page goes further and says it outright: "The game is not playable on PlayStation 4." If a PS4 or an Xbox One is the console you own, it will not run this game.
That is a more specific answer than most platform questions get, because here the platform holders have published the denial themselves rather than leaving it to be inferred from an omission. It is worth seeing exactly where each of them says it. Readers who came for the whole picture rather than the console answer will find it in everything Rockstar has confirmed about GTA 6.

What Sony Has Published
The clearest statement belongs to Sony, and it appears twice on the same page.
The PlayStation product page for Grand Theft Auto VI lists the game under "Available on: PS5, PS5 Pro Enhanced." In the section describing the game's PlayStation 5 features, the page states plainly that the game is not playable on PlayStation 4. And in its own FAQ, under the question "Will Grand Theft Auto VI be playable on PlayStation®4?", Sony answers: "Grand Theft Auto VI will only be playable on PlayStation 5 consoles. It will not be available for PlayStation 4 consoles."
The same FAQ gives the release date as November 19, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro. There is nothing on that page that leaves a PS4 door open.
What Microsoft Has Published
The Xbox side is just as conclusive, but it is stated differently, and the difference is worth naming rather than smoothing over.
Xbox's own Grand Theft Auto VI page carries a platform line reading "Available November 19, 2026 — Xbox Series X|S," and its Game details panel lists "Platforms: Xbox Series X|S." The purchase section offers the Standard Edition at $79.99, the Ultimate Edition at $99.99, and an Ultimate Edition Upgrade at $20.00. Xbox One appears nowhere on the page, in any field.
What Microsoft has not published is a sentence like Sony's — there is no Xbox FAQ answering "will it run on Xbox One?", only a listing that names one console family and not the other. That matches Take-Two's June 24, 2026 pre-order press release, which describes the game as "Launching November 19, 2026, for the PlayStation® 5 computer entertainment systems and Xbox Series X|S games and entertainment systems for $79.99." It is an absence rather than a denial, and this site will describe it as one.
Backward Compatibility Runs the Other Way
A lot of the confusion here comes from a real feature that people have the direction of backwards.
Microsoft's backward compatibility programme is described on its own page as letting you "play thousands of Original Xbox, Xbox 360, and Xbox One games" on newer hardware. Its FAQ is explicit about which way that runs: "Xbox Series X|S Backward Compatibility is free and allows you to play select Xbox 360, Original Xbox games, and Xbox One games you already own on Xbox Series X|S."
Older games on newer consoles, not the reverse. No published Microsoft programme lets an Xbox One run an Xbox Series X|S title, and Grand Theft Auto VI is listed as an Xbox Series X|S title. Neither company has announced any streaming or cloud arrangement that would change that. Sony's page does list "Remote Play supported," but it does not name which devices can act as a client, so nothing there supports a claim about playing on a PS4 by any route.

The "Plays Best On PlayStation 5" Badge and PS5 Pro
Two hardware details are worth setting out precisely, because both get stretched.
Rockstar's own game site at rockstargames.com/VI carries a "Plays Best On PlayStation 5" badge, beneath a line reading "For more on PlayStation benefits, see playstation.com/GTAVIfeatures." Rockstar publishes no explanation anywhere of what the badge means. That link lands on the features section of Sony's GTA VI page, where Sony — not Rockstar — describes Tempest 3D audio, fast loading via the PS5's SSD, DualSense haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and the controller's integrated speaker. Those are Sony's descriptions of PlayStation 5 platform features, not a Rockstar statement about how the two announced consoles compare. Nobody has published one of those.
Sony also lists the game as "PS5 Pro Enhanced," both in the "Available on" line and in the feature list — one of the few concrete hardware facts published about GTA VI. Sony does not say what it delivers for this game: no resolution, no frame rate, no ray tracing claim, no comparison against a base PS5. Anyone quoting numbers for a PS5 Pro version is quoting something no primary source has printed.
If You Own a PS4 or an Xbox One
Playing on November 19, 2026 means owning a PlayStation 5 or an Xbox Series X|S. Every purchase route leads there: Take-Two's release names the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Rockstar Games Store, and global retailers, all selling the same two console versions. Digital pre-orders can begin pre-loading on November 12, 2026, and even the boxed copy is a download code — Rockstar's store states that physical versions contain only a code and that "A disc will not be included in the box," which our disc guide covers in full. There is no physical media path onto older hardware.

Two related answers usually arrive with this one. There is no announced PC version — see is GTA 6 coming to PC — and no announced Game Pass or PS Plus release, covered in our subscription guide. If you are deciding what to buy, the editions comparison and pre-order bonuses guide set out what each version contains, and the countdown tracks the launch date itself.
The GTA V Precedent Is History, Not a Forecast
One previous Grand Theft Auto did move between console generations. That history is documented, but it is history about a different game, offered as a record of what happened rather than a prediction about this one.
Take-Two's September 17, 2013 press release announced Grand Theft Auto V as available worldwide for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Rockstar's Newswire then ran "Grand Theft Auto V Coming this Fall to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC" on June 9, 2014, roughly nine months later.
That is what happened to GTA V, and it says nothing about GTA VI. Rockstar has not announced a last-generation version of Grand Theft Auto VI, has not said one is in development, and has not said one is ruled out — this guide will not convert that silence into either a promise or a denial. Note also that GTA V's move was a game arriving on newer hardware, which is the opposite of what a PS4 or Xbox One owner would need here.
What Is Still Unknown
Stated plainly. Rockstar and Take-Two have published no PS4 or Xbox One version, no plan for one, and no statement about whether one could exist. Microsoft has published no explicit Xbox One answer, only a Series X|S-only listing. Nobody has published what "Plays Best On PlayStation 5" means as a technical matter, or what "PS5 Pro Enhanced" delivers for this game specifically.
This page will be revised if Rockstar's Newswire, its own GTA VI pages, or the PlayStation and Xbox product pages say otherwise. Until then the answer at the top stands: PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and Sony has said in writing that a PS4 will not run it.
